paula muhr

i posted this to emily's facebook, but i feel like it would be nice to repost here for everyone to see and discuss.

http://iheartphotograph.blogspot.com/2010/02/paula-muhr.html

she's doing something similar to emily, recreating images of her mother. but i feel as if it's quite a bit different because she is DIRECTLY reproducing the situation, even down to costuming the shot and image degradation whereas emily is reinterpreting family photos and even stories making them into photos. let me know what you guys think.

I already mentioned this to Emily last semester in thesis, but thought I would bring it back up here.
Nina was a guest lecturer last semester and with her series, The Nightgown Pictures, is doing something similar as well. She's investigating a series of photographs taken every year of her mother on her birthday. Instead of putting herself in the images however, she is simply exploring and attempting to find the exact locations of the previous images.

Good stuff and an interesting way of displaying her process within her installation and exhibition.

  2. so glad nina katchadourian came here last semester...
i feel like paula muhr really gets to the nostalgia of materials and looking at materials, i feel like that is more important than what is actually happening in the image

    truly always,
    emily
