Sunday Documentaries

Today I watched some good documentaries. Sunday's are good for that.

An American Journey: In Robert Frank's Footsteps

A tribute of sorts to Robert Frank. A journey to some of the stops in published in the book, 50 years after it's publishing, and some interviews with interesting characters that were on the way for Frank and in some of the photographs. It wasn't earth shattering but it was only an hour long and interesting enough.

Herb and Dorothy

About Herb and Dorothy Vogel, two of the most important art collectors of minimal and conceptual art. They amassed thousands of pieces, fame, and artist's friends, they could have amassed a fortune too, but they didn't. They remained wonderful everyday people with a shared passion for art. Plus they're cute as hell.

All of this reminds me of my favorite documentary Vernon, Florida.

It's about...Vernon, Florida...and its colorful inhabitants. A cop, some senior citizens, a preacher, and a turkey hunter, all sharing their insights and bragging rights with rest of the world. So good. So funny. So charming. It's by director Errol Morris, and I'm about to watch another of his documentaries, Gate to Heaven about a pet cemetery....

All of these are available on Netflix watch instantly...Bonus.

Happy documentary, happy sunday, and happy new school year!

Art Reality

In one day I read about the work, Return of the Real, about people who have been a part of reality TV (by the 2006 Turner prize nominee, Phil Collins, (regrettably not also the singer of course)) and the Bravo reality TV show Work of Art, a competition for who will be America's next top artist....It pretty much makes my head swim.

The topic of reality TV....
The comparison of the spectacle of the Turner prize and its naming of the UK artist of the year and this show as it supposedly announces America's next big artist...
The celebrity artist...
What makes a person or work deserving of such titles...
What makes a person worthy of celeb status...
Why do we still call reality TV...reality TV...and why are we so obsessed?
And on and on..

It's a mind tickler.
One that I don't think I'm very comfortable with..And one that semi-shamefully makes me admit I too, wish I had watched the Bravo show...

C/O Berlin – Talents 2011

Found this over at Horses Think today, some of you might be interested in it (solo show in Berlin!):

"C/O Berlin is seeking young photographers and art critics for their 2011 Talents series of exhibitions. The theme this year is Cinematic Thinking and applications will be accepted until December 31, 2010.

The Talents series of exhibitions is really a fantastic opportunity for an artist just getting started. If chosen, the artist will be featured in a solo exhibition at one of Europe’s premiere photography institutions as well as have an accompanying catalogue published which includes an essay written by an art critic.

From the newsletter I received this morning:

“In 2011, the Talents series will focus on the theme of Cinematic Thinking. Engagement with the medium of film has become ever more central to photography in recent years. This can be seen in the increasing exploration of film production processes, experimentation with narrative structures, and references to film aesthetics and film myths. How can photography adapt film structures and simulaneously break them open? What strengths do still images have over moving pictures? Photography in the classical sense, with its conventional wall presentation, can be expanded through the utilization of projection and installation strategies, thereby creating new possibilities for reflecting on the medium of photography itself.

How do you apply? Photographers under the age of 35 can submit up to 15 samples of their work in print form – maximal size DIN A4, no originals. A short project description should accompany the photographs, as well as the application form that van be completed online on the C/O Berlin homepage. A fee of 20 Euros will be raised. Please note that art critics are welcome to submit samples of their work at any time.”

You can find further information here."

This. Was intense.

Obviously biased. But. I so did not. care.

To make things fair...Here's a criticism of the film's bias.

Watch it and let me/us know what you think is or isn't fair....

Stuffs To Read. Love Chelsea.

Helllloooooooo.

So I've recently just finished reading these 2 books for grad school. They are both really easy reads and probably would have been more helpful, or at least interesting, for us to read as students than most pro-practice lectures.

Nonetheless if you just graduated, reading them probably is not the best option right now-Since the first pretty much points out how awful the odds of becoming a 'successful' artist are, and the other is all about the economics of the art world. Oui. Instead maybe you should give this short documentary a try..It's nothing too special but...if the segment with chuck's wife discussing the first portrait Mr. Close painted after becoming paralyzed doesn't encourage you to keep plugging away at making work..I'm not real sure what will. In that case...go ahead and read the books...
