jamie oliver TED

this is for abbe. i noticed she was talking about cakes and preservatives and being conscious of what's in your food and Jamie Oliver, the 2010 TED Prize winner, just did a lecture about teaching children about food and the dangerous position we've put ourselves in with our diets, talking about fast food culture, frozen foods and losing the traditional family meal/not cooking or passing down recipes.

  1. my father is an elementary school teacher in the kansas city missouri school district. he, along with the other teachers at his school, teaches his students about gardening and growing their own food. in my father's class, they even prepare their own lunches from the food they grow in the classroom, so they are learning about the importance of fresh, not processed food as well as cooking skills.

however. my father teaches at a montessori school, one of the specialty magnet schools started in an attempt to desegregate the KCMSD in the early 90s. it is a special case. although many of their students are "inner city" kids, the school is one you have to chose to send your children to, so unless the parents are conscious of the options they have for where to send their child, kids won't get the chance to go there. what about all of the other schools in the district? what about the children whose parents don't care?

my primary concern is those kids. if they aren't learning it at home and they aren't learning it at school, they won't learn it... and i don't know how to change it.

at least the kids at my dad's school can get the message.
