Art Reality

In one day I read about the work, Return of the Real, about people who have been a part of reality TV (by the 2006 Turner prize nominee, Phil Collins, (regrettably not also the singer of course)) and the Bravo reality TV show Work of Art, a competition for who will be America's next top artist....It pretty much makes my head swim.

The topic of reality TV....
The comparison of the spectacle of the Turner prize and its naming of the UK artist of the year and this show as it supposedly announces America's next big artist...
The celebrity artist...
What makes a person or work deserving of such titles...
What makes a person worthy of celeb status...
Why do we still call reality TV...reality TV...and why are we so obsessed?
And on and on..

It's a mind tickler.
One that I don't think I'm very comfortable with..And one that semi-shamefully makes me admit I too, wish I had watched the Bravo show...

  1. i watched the first episode of "work of art"... just like any other reality show, i guess. of course they aren't going to be the next great artist, but isn't it fantastic that they got some publicity? or, that peregrine did. i dunno, i'm happy to see kcai grads on these bravo shows (ari fish?) ... and pretty proud that she got so far. the fact that people outside the art world would have an interest in it is enough for me.
as for the subject of "reality" tv... hopefully everyone knows by now what's real and what isn't.... right...?
